The Story of a Beacon School

I both produced and directed this short film shot over two days in Manchester with a small 3 person crew. I was keen for the short to feel naturalistic and very much like a documentary whilst still being visually engaging and imaginatively shot.

It was particularly important to show the sense of community at the school and how the training of a few teachers can have a widespread impact not only outside of their lessons but outside of the school and into the community. As well as covering this in the interviews, the whole visual narrative of the film is this sense of filling up and coming together.

The idea of a practical title and the whiteboard then filling up with post it notes and input from the students was tied to this and also a desire for us to feel really embedded within the school environment. The grade as well is used as a narrative tool - we start with very cool, blue tones as we see the bare classroom but as the story progresses and the students and different voices all join in, the film itself becomes warmer and more inviting.
